Our History

The South Dakota State University Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Foundation’s efforts directly benefit the University by gathering support from many passionate private donors. This is the University’s largest private funding resource and directly impacts initiatives that grow and improve SDSU.

We’re proud of where we stand as an organization today. In 1946, the Foundation was brought to life in response to a request from Professor E.L. Erickson. As the inventor of a seed blower, he hoped to manufacture and sell throughout the nation.

In October that same year, the board hired Dr. Erickson for $300 a month to see the project through. Thus began the SDSU Foundation's commitment to supporting innovative ideas and initiatives at SDSU.

During the first official board meeting, the Foundation’s balance totaled $157.32. To the credit of our committed board and staff, along with the support of private donors, the Foundation has reached $190 million in assets. Funds raised over the years have benefited every student on campus through new facilities, classroom enhancements, faculty support, and thousands of scholarships.  As our university continues to grow, so do the number of opportunities for our donors to become involved and make an impact.
